ty.net/sessionPop.cfm?confid=121&proposalid=9448\nThis is a case study in h
ow one organization was able to achieve the seemingly impossible. We will t
ell the story of a journey which successfully fast-tracked the implementati
on of a data governance program by starting out small, showing incremental
value, and in turn, achieving business buy-in while building the ‘dat
a’ momentum one track at a time. We will share lessons learned, do&rs
quo;s and don’ts, benefits, and key success drivers from our journey.
Many organizations don’t have the luxury of standing up a data gover
nance program in isolation, let alone building a data railroad. The ability
to move the company to the ‘right side of the tracks’ laid in
this team’s ability to show the business value derived from data gove
rnance, while in parallel establishing the process and procedures associate
d with the governance program. The data governance team profiled in this st
udy started with a one track mind: introduce data governance while simultan
eously showing the benefit of this new concept across the organization. The
team began this process by getting initial executive sponsorship, standing
up data domains, and aligning the organization’s data, by data eleme
nt, to these domains. New in-house processes were introduced and standardiz
ed to support these domains, and buy-in from stakeholders was provided as c
learly articulated business benefit was demonstrated.
