Data governance is at the heart of all data management activities and is heavily reliant on effective data modeling. This is a two-way interdependency. Neither can work effectively without the other. In this workshop, we describe real-world data governance processes, based upon years of experience with major clients, and the accompanying data modeling practices and additional information required to manage change effectively, including data lineage. Then it will be time for you to put those processes to the test, pushing proposed changes through the data governance pipeline, in which you are a key participant. Will our apparently perfect processes and data modeling practices hold up? Participants will learn the following from each other as well as from Chris and George:

  • Common pitfalls in apparently perfect processes
  • The importance of joined-up thinking when implementing data governance and related technology (hint: you need a data model for data governance)
  • The perspective of others involved in the process

George is an independent information management practitioner, with 20-plus years of experience creating and managing models of various types in many organizations. He encourages organizations to connect and utilize their metadata islands, to recognize the wealth of information contained in their data models, to recognize that the creation of data models must form part of an integrated approach to improving their business, and therefore to avoid the creation of metadata islands in the first place. He is a blogger, co-author of "Data Modeling Made Simple Using PowerDesigner" with Steve Hoberman, and author of several articles on TDAN.com. George is an established conference presenter - if you attend one of his presentations you'll see just how much importance he places on the use of modeling and metadata management tools.
